Preparation and Properties of Uranium and Thorium Monosulfides
Uranium and thorium monosulfide bodies made by the reaction of H2S with the metal at low temperature followed by homogenization and sintering at high temperatures were found to have semi-metallic properties. The effect of homogenization and firing temperature, S/metal ratio, impurities, and atmosphere on the densification and properties of these bodies is discussed. Electrical resistivity, oxidation resistance, modulus of rupture, and other properties were evaluated and correlated with microstructure whenever possible. Some US-- ThS solid solutions were made.
