INFLUENCE OF IONIZING RADIATION ON GLUTAMINASE ACTIVITY IN MOUSE BRAIN AND LIVER

Journal Article · · Nature
DOI:https://doi.org/10.1038/1961223a0· OSTI ID:4740002
A significant inhibition of glutaminase activity was demonstrated in the brain and liver of mice after whole-body exposure for 58 min to 500 r x radiation. The inhibition increased progressively for 48 hr after irradiation. Similar resuits were reported previously for carboxypeptidose activity. It was concluded the decrease of the activity of these mitochondrial enzymes may be explained as a consequence of changes in the synthesis of new proteins, and therefore also of enzymal proteins. Since both enzymes have active SH groupings, it is postulated they may be inhibited by the direct action of x rays on these groupings. (C.H.)
