MODIFICATIONS OF THE SEMINAL VESICLE OF CASTRATE ADULT RATS IRRADIATED AND TREATED WITH TESTOSTERONE
Adult male rats castrated 2 months previously were irradiated in the suprapubic region with 1000 r and some animals were injected intramuscularly with 10 mg testosterone propionate 1 hr later. Seminal vesicles removed 7 and 15 days later were examined histologically. Only slight changes caused by radiation were noted after 7 days in the atrophic vesicles, in which the epithelium was low and the tunica propria acellular and fibrillar. After 15 days, radiation-induced changes were more severe in uninjected rats as shown by karyorrhexis and karyolysis of epithelial nuclei and polymorphic cells in the stroma. In vesicles stimulated by testosterone, few radiation changes were seen 7 days later, the cylindrical epithelial cells filled with grantules being normal in appearance except for some with giant nuclei. After 15 days the glandular epithelium showed various signs of hyperfunction induced by testosterone and very little evidence of radiation injury. (R.H.D.)
