ROLE OF IRRADIATION WITH X RAYS ON THE APPEARANCE OF MAMMARY OR OVARIAN TUMORS ACCORDING TO THE STRAIN AND AGE OF THE MICE

Prepubertal and adult mice (aged 4 to 6 weeks and 4 to 6 months, respectively) were exposed to a single whole-body 300-r dose of x rays and development of the tumors was followed. Three strains of mice were studied: IC strain, in which mammary tumors are rare; C3He/A, which lacks the milk factor; and XLII, which never develops mammary tumor. Only a few mammary tumors developed and only in the IC strain; the incidence rate was 6% in nonirradiated controls and 2% in both of the irradiated groups. This confirms previous findings that irradiation retards the appearance of mammary tumors. Ovarian tumors were completely lacking in nonirradiated mice of the IC and XLII strains, but present in C3He/A cortrols in 6 and 9% of the young and old groups, respectively. It also appeared that younger mice were more susceptible to x-ray induction of ovarian tumors. Two types of ovarian tumors predominated, namely, folliculotubular and luteal. (TCO)
