SEPARATING AND REFINING Th BY MEANS OF SALICYLIC ACID (in Russian)

A satisfactory solvent extraction of Th by salicylic acid was achieved in the presence of various admixtures (Al, Ca, Mg, Mn, Pb, Ni, Cu, and Cr) with only trivalent iron hindering the recovery. A satisfactory quantitative precipitation of Th was accomplished in the presence of uranium without capturing the latter. Salicylic acid separation of Th and La resulted in final precipitation at pH 3.8. The solubilities of thorium salicylate in ether in the presence of various amounts of salicylic acid were determined, and separation of U and Th by ether extraction of thorium salicylate was demonstrated. Solvent extraction of Th by aceton and separation of mesathorium I and II and La from U resulted in pure Th-232. (R.V.J.)
