A chronic radiation sickness was induced in 12 dogs and 128 rats by administering 0.02 mu C of Po/sup 210/ per gram subcutaneously and 0.003 to 0.005 mu C of Po/sup 210/ per gram intravenously, or 0.4 mu C of Sr/sup 90/ per gram intraperitoneally. The animals suffered a 40 to 45% loss in weight at the height of the radiation sickness. On autopsy, atrophy of the gastrointestinai tract, and degenerative changes of the parenchymatous organs were observed. Small beads of the mucous membrane covered with amorphous epithelium did not show any signs of secretion on being detected on the 182nd day after injection of Po/ sup 210/. Differentiation of glandular cells in the mucous membrane in the lower part of a dog's stomach had been retarded, and an inactive epithelium had spread from the infected lesions to the basal sections of the glands. Nerve cells in the large intestine of the dog were shriveled up. Erosion of parts of the mucous membrane was noted. An analogous slow-down in recuperative processes was observed with the introduction of Sr/sup 90/ only with the infliction of an added injury such as a burn or a cut. Operation on the stomach or intestines under conditions of chronic radiation sickness may result in post-operational complications due to the slow-down of recuperative processes in the gastrointestinal tract.
