The possibility of the formation of a radioprotectant compound during bacterial growth was investigated. The radioprotective activity of several hundred fermentation liquids was examined. Of the fermentation liquids tested, good protective ability was rendered, mainly after acid hydrolysis, by the fermentation liquor from a Penicillium notatum strain used in industry. This agent was shown to be D-penicillamine. Its radioprotective activity and its ability to reduce the toxicity of nitrogen mustard were compared with the effect of other well-known radioprotectants, on an equimolar basis. Its protective ability on E. coli B against LD/sub 50/ doses of x rays and nitrogen mustard was about the same as that of cysteine. However, it was only half as effective against x radiation as cysteamine and AET. It was less effective in protecting the cells against radiation than in assisting their recovery from radiation injury. (H.H.D.)
