REMOTE SEQUELAE OF CHANGES IN THE REACTIVITY OF THE CEREBRAL CORTEX IN MONKEYS SUBJECTED TO IONIZING RADIATION
Steady conditioned reflexes were developed in five monkeys prior to whole-body single x irradiation with 378 to 399 r. One year later the monkeys had recovered from a moderate radiation sickness and the conditioned reflexes had also completely recovered. Subjection of the animals to various conditions of stress brought about the development of severe neurosis, which did not occur under similar conditions before the irradiation. The vulnerable cortex is regarded as a residual consequence of the radiation sickness to which the animals had been subjected. The phenomenon of the reactivity of the cerebral cortex after recovery from radiation injury may serve as a pathogenic factor for the experimental development of neuroses in monkeys. (OTS)
