An improved measurement of the lower limits of the lifetime of nucleons against spontaneous decay by processes which do not conserve the number of nucleons is presented. The decay modes considered release charged particles with energies generally in excess of 100 Mev. A detector containing 198 liters of liquid scintillator was constructed to detect possible decay events. A Cherenkov counter anticoincidence shield consisting of a water tank 2.7 m in diameter and 2.2 m high viewed by photomultiplier tubes surrounded the detector and the experiment was carried out in a salt mine 585 m underground to reduce cosmic ray backgrouad. The system was set to detect pulses as low in energy as 8 Mev. The lifetime limits obtained for various decay modes were from 20 to 30 times greater than the best previous limits, and ranged from 1 3 x 10/sup 26/ to 70 X 10/sup 26/ years. (P.C.H.)
