A review of the Report of the Unfted Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation, issued in September 1962, is presented. The 1962 report consists of a review of the information available on the biological effects of ionizing radiation and of the doses to which mankind is at present subjected from a variety of sources. Topics covered include: radiobiology; hereditary effects; somatic effects; production, transport, and deposition of nuclear explosion debris; contamination of human diets by fission products and resulting tissue doses; Sr/sup 90/ in human bone; Cs/sup 137/ in diets and human beings; doses from shortlived isotopes; C/sup 14/ from nuclear tests; natural background radiation; medical, occupational, and other exposures; radioactive wastes; and comparison of doses and estimates of risks.
