RADIOLYTIC OXIDATION OF p-XYLENE (in French)

Journal Article · · Intern. J. Appl. Radiation Isotopes
The radiolytic oxidation of p-xylene under 1 atm of O/sub 2/ and at 80 to 130 deg C is studied, in the biological shield of a reactor (gamma dose rate = 1.25 x 10/sup 13/ ev. g/sup -1/. sec/sup -1/, fast neutron flux = 10/sup 7/ cm/ sup -2/. sec/sup -1/). About 15 hr of irradiation are required to induce a radiolytic yield on the order of 17% in order to increase the yield an activator is added to the unirradiated p-xylene, following which addition, an irradiation time of only 8 hr results in a yield of p-toluic acid of 18 to 22%.
