ANALYTICAL METHOD FOR THE SPECTROGRAPHIC DETERMINATION OF CALCIUM AND ALUMINIUM IN MAGNOX MN 70 ALLOY

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4736974
The sample is dissolved in hydrochloric acid, and scandium internal standard is added. The soiution is excited by a rotating copper disk technique using a 15-kv spark, and the spectra are recorded through a medium quartz spectrograph. The method is suitable for the determination of 50 to 400 ppm calcium and 150 to 2000 ppm aluminum in magnesium alloys containing 0.55 to 0.85% manganese. Using a bulk standard solution, prepared from the synthetic alloy base solution, the standard deviations for the spectrographic finish were found to be: 23 ppm aluminum at the 500 ppm level and 15 ppm calcium at the 200 ppm level, calculated from duplicate exposures.
