EFFECTS OF RARE-EARTH-ION SUBSTITUTION UPON THE FLUORESCENT LIFETIME OF TERBIUM IN THE COMPOUND TERBIUM HEXA-ANTIPYRENE TRI-IODIDE

Journal Article · · Journal of the Optical Society of America (U.S.)
Additional evidence for the theory that an ion pair resonance mechanism of energy transfer plays an important role in the dissipation of energy within a crystal was derived from a study of the fluorescent lifetime of the /sup 5/D/sub 4/ metastable state of terbium in the compound terbium rare-earth hexa-antipyrene tri-iodide. Erbium, holmium, and neodymium ions caused a notable decrease in the terbium fluorescent lifetime, indicating relatively strong couplings between terbium and erbium, holmium, or neodymium. (D.C.W.)
