Tritium labeled /sub DL/-thyroxine and 3,5,3'-triodo-/sub DL/thyronine were synthesized using labeled hydriodic acid in a general tritiation method. Both were labeled in the alpha - BETA positions of the side chain. I/sup 131/- labeling of tritiated 3,5 diiodothyronine gave rise to double-labeled thyroxine and 3,5,3' tri-iodothyronine. The purity of the synthetic compounds was controlled, and good agreement was obtained between the experimental and the theoretical specific activities of the synthesized compounds. The position and stability of the incorporated tritium atoms were established. (P.C.H.)
