The control apparatus consisted of a fuel element leak detector and means for suddenly reducing the rate of flow of coolant through the coolant channels thereby rapidly raising the temperature of fuel elements. This rapid teraperature raise caused a transient burst of fission products from any existing leaks in the fuel element sheaths into the coolant stream for detection. (C.E.S.)
