FUEL ELEMENT SURFACE CONTAMINATION (URANIUM) TESTER
Technical Report

OSTI ID:4735699
A common problem of fuel-element fabricators is contamination on the outside of the fuel-element cladding. Control of this contamination by alpha counting is described. The alpha particles from the contamination U strike a ZnS scintillating decal directiy fastened to lucite light pipes. The scintillation is piped to a photomultiplier which converts the signals to electric pulses for counting. The count rate is directly proportional to the amount of U on the fuelelement clad surface.
