Radiation-induced Ionic Reactions: Cyclopentadiene Polymerization

Investigations on the radiation-induced polymerization of certain monomers provided evidence for the production of ionic as opposed to radical initiation. Pure cyclopentadiene was irradiated with Co/sup 60/ gamma radiation. At -78.5 deg C a gel was formed after conversion of 1.6% of the monomer to polymer. The results of carbon-hydrogen analysis fitted an empirical formula C₅H₆. The efficiency of the reaction at low temperature, and the necessity for rigorous drying to attain high yield are criteria for the non- participation of radical processes. A mechanism for radiation-induced polymerization was formulated. (C.E.S.)
