RADIOLYTIC POLYMERIZATION OF CYCLOPENTADIENE

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4197707
A method is given for polymerization of cyclopentadiene and its homologs under certain conditions of irradiation, temperature, and solvent to produce a product useful as a cross-linking agent, drying oil, or lacquer component. In an example, cyclopentadiene is kept cold (0 deg C or below) while receiving 16 megaroentgens of gamma radiation from Co/sup 60/ over a period of 68 hr. After irradiation the sample was diluted with cyclohexane and part was hydrogenated over platinum oxide catalyst (1800 std. cu. ft. H/sub 2/ absorbed per pound at 60 psi and 15 deg C) and brought to 60 deg C. After distilling off the solvent, a hard polymer was obtained in about 10% yield. Thus the high temperature and pressure normally required for the hydrogenation are avoided. (T.R.H.)
