FABRICATING PLUTONIUM FOR BETTER PERFORMANCE

Difficulties in using plutonium as a fuel (i.e., cost of fabrication by remote handling) are discussed; and fabrication techniques for Al-Pu, Pu-Fe, U-Pu- fissium, U-PuMo, and PuO/sub 2/-UO/sub 2/ are described. Performance is also evaluated. Other plutonium fuel materials being investigated are solid-solution alloys (Th-Pu, U-Nb-Pu, Zr-Pu, Nb-Pu-Si), liquid-metal fuels including Ce-Pu-Co alloys, ceramic fuels (PuC and PuC-UC mixtures, PuN, Pu/sub 2/Si/sub 3/, and PuSi/ sub 2/), cermet fuels (PuC and PuO/sub 2/), and cost dispersion alloys (Fe-Pu alloys).
