Alloys of plutonium in Fe, Zr, Th, U, and U--Mo that are possible reactor fuel materials were examined for their oxidation behavior in air up to 500 deg C and carbon dioxide up to 800 deg C; compatibility of the ternary U--Mo--Pu alloys with stainless steel was investigated in the temperature range 600 to 650 deg C; hardness figures for the binary and ternary alloys at room and elevated temperatures are reported. Some PuO/sub 2/ cermets stable up to 1400 deg C are described. Low-melting ternary alloys of the Pu--Co--Ce type were examined for physical properties and compatibility with container materials. The oxidation of pure delta -phase plutonium in air was also studied. (auth)
