ELECTRODEPOSITION OF PLUTONIUM AND URANIUM FROM MOLTEN SALT SOLUTIONS OF DICHLORIDES

Journal Article · · Journal of Inorganic and Nuclear Chemistry (England) Merged with Inorg. Nucl. Chem. Lett. to form Polyhedron
The usefulness of molten salt solutions of Cs/sub 2/PuCl/sub 6/ and Cs/ sub 2/UCl/sub 6/ for plutonium and uranium electrolyses was investigated. Plutonium and uranium metal were recovered from solutions without the use of soluble anodes. Up to 66 per cent of the Pu dissolved in salt solutions was recovered with Ta cathodes. No net Pu was recovered from solution when Pu cathodes were used because of the reoxidation of the deposit by dissolved chlorine. Uranium metal was deposited on molten lead and solid molybdenum cathodes with high yields. The decomposition potentials for Pu(M)-- Pu(O) and U(III)- U(O) were found to be in agreement with previous results for solutions of PuCl/sub 3/ and UCl/sub 3/. (auth)
