A method is described for the rapid determination of I/sup 131/ in milk by direct absorption of I/sup 131/ on anion-exchange resin and subsequent gamma- spectrometric analysis of the resin. The method requires less than 2 hr per 1 gal sample and a counting time of only 10 min to achieve a minimum detection limit of 3.5 x 10/sup -15/ C per ml. The arion-exchange concentration step completely eliminates the interference of ali other fission-product contaminants found in milk except Ru/sup 103/, Ru/sup 106/, and Zr-Nb/sup 95/. An average recovery of 98% was experienced. (P.C.H.)
