One ml of blood was withdrawn from 3-month-old rats and irradiated in vitro with 5000, 10000, or 25000 r x radiation. It was immediately reinjected in the same rat from which it was withdrawn. Two days later biopsy specimens were taken from the skin, forestomach, glandular stomach, and ileum, and the number of mitoses were counted. Blood samples were also withdrawn and counts of red and white blood cells were made. The irradiation effect was slight and statistically insignificant, showing that roentgen irradiation of blood in vitro releases neither mitosis-stimulating nor -inhibiting factors, not even when given at fairly high dosage, in contradistinction to what has been concluded from experiments in vivo. The leukocytosis that was noted in some animals was interpreted as being due to inflammatory factors arising from the reinjection of blood. (H.H.D.)
