>Results obtained in the study of the radiolysis of liquid n-pentane in the presence of iodine are reported. The experimental results are very slight and their interpretation is based on the general characteristics of the radiolysis of hydrocarbons. An analogy between the radiochemical behavior of alkanes and of cyclanes is also assumed. The addition reactions of hydriodic acid on the radiolysis alkenes were determined for n-pentane. The results compare well with those for the radiolysis of n-pentane in the absence of iodine, obtained by previous workers. They are exactly between the values of radiochemical yields relative to liquid n-butane and n-hexane in the presence of iodine. This last comparison is very instructive since with it one can define some general aspects of the radiolysis of alkanes in the presence of iodine. The parent iodides are the major products and the yields of secondary iodides are higher than those of the primary iodide. The degradation of the carbon chain does not occur by a simple coupling mechanism. A report of some results obtained on isopentane is also given. (tr-auth)
