Alcohol solutions 0.17 to 3.5M in H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ were oxidized on a Pt anode (a wire ring 0.3 mm in diameter) in the presence of air and in the absence of air, while the solution was irradiated from without with a beam of x rays. Voltage and current relationships were followed with a polarograph. The unirradiated solutions showed the existence of two current maxima, which increased linearly with concentration of C/sub 2/H/sub 5/OH in the interval of 0.17 to 1.0M. Up to a dose of approximates 5 x 10/sup 19/ ev/cm/sup 3/, the current maxima decreased with increasing dose, when the irradiation was carried out in the absence of oxygen. On irradiation the 0.35M H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ solution of alcohol in the presence of oxygen, the first current maximum hardly changed, but the second current maximum increased directly with dose up to a dose of 3 x 10/sup 19/ ev/cm/sup 3/. It was found that the addition of 0.5 to 3.0 x 10/sup -4/M acetaldehyde decreased the magnitudes of the first and second current maxima, while the addition of hydrogen peroxide increased the magnitude of the second current maximum, but did not affect the first current maximum. The accumulation of aldehyde and peroxide in the irradiated solution was determined. The G yield of H/sub 2/O/sub 2/ was 4.4 mols/100 ev in the presence of oxygen, but in the absence of oxygen, the concentration of H/sub 2/O/sub 2/ fell to approximates 0.5 x 10/sup -4/M, and stayed constant at this value with further irradiation. Acetaldehyde was formed with a yield of 2.15 mols/100 ev both in the presence of oxygen and in the absence of oxygen. The observed effects can be explained by the formation of acetaldehyde and H/sub 2/O/sub 2/ as radiolysis products. (TTT)
