Solutions of 0.4 to 18M H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ were given a dose of 5 x 10/ sup 15/ to 2 x 10/.sup 16/ ev/ml-sec by 65-kev x rays, and Co/sup 60/ gamma ray s in the presence of ferrous sulfate. The concentrations of Fe/sup 3+/ and SO/ sub 2/ were determined spectrophotometrically. The ratio of G(Fe/sup 3+/)/sub O2/ to G(Fe/sup 3+/)/sub N2/ decreased from 1.9 to 1. 8 on increasing the concentration of H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ from 0.4 to 17.3M. The yield of SO/sub 2/ was 0.61 molecules per 100 ev of absorbed energy, and did not depend on the presence or absence of oxygen. The yield for the decomposition of H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ was equal to 4.15 molecules per 100 ev in 17.3M H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/. The mechanisms for the reaction for the irradiation of a dilute and a concentrated H/sub 2/SO/ sub 4/ solution are discussed. (TTT)
