The effect of cystamine on oxidative phosphorylation in the spleen was investigated in white rats exposed to 600 r. A marked decrease in the rate of oxidative phosphorylation and in its effect on tissue respiration occurred in the control animals. Cystamlne injected intraperitoneally before exposure increased the level of esterification of inorganic phosphates and the degree of association between phosphorylation and tissue respiration, but not to the normal level. The data indicate that cystamine lessens, but does not fully eliminate, postradiation disturbances in oxidative phosphorylation in rat spleen. (OTS)
