THE SOLVENT EXTRACTION OF THORIUM BY THENOYLTRIFLUOROACETONE AND THE INFLUENCE OF AQUEOUS COMPLEXATION BY THE CHELATING AGENT

Studies of the solvent extraction of thorium by benzene solutions of thenoyltrifluoroacetone led to the establishment of the existence of aqueous complexation by the chelating agent qn equilibrium constart of 1.5 plus or minus 0.7 was measured for thereaction Th/sup +4/ + HT = ThT/sup +3/ + H/sup +/ where the charged speciel are in the aqueous phase and HT represents the thenoyltrifluoroacetone in the organic phase. A value of 1.9 plus or minus 0.4 was measured for the reaction Th/sup +4/ + 2 HT = ThT/sup +2/ + 2H/sup +/. A value of 22 was measured for the overall equilibrium constant for the extraction of thorium, Th/sup +4/ + 4 HT = ThT/sup 4/ + 4H/sup +/, where the species ThT/sup 4/ and HT are in the organic phase. The studies were conducted at an ionic strength of two, in a noncomplexing medium containing lithium perchlorate and in a complexing medium containing lithium chloride. The thenoyltrifluoroacetone concertration was varied from 0.1 to 0.4M and the acidity from 0.02 to 1.0M. The equilibrium constants for the aqueous phase reactiona, Th/sup +4/ + T/sup -/ = ThT/sup +3/ and Th/sup +4/ + 2T/sup -/ = ThT/ sup +2/ were calculated as 1.4 x 10/ sup 8/ and 1.7 x 10/sup 16/ from this data and the published values of pKa and the distribution constant of the chelating agent.
