EXTRACTION OF THORIUM WITH THENOYLTRIFLUROACETONE. EFFECT OF ACETIC ACID

The effect of acetic acid on the extraction of thorium with thenoyltrifluoroacetone in carbon tetrachloride and in hexone was studied. To account for the enhanced extraction of thorium in the presence of acetic acid, reactions are proposed which involve the formation of thoriumthenoyltrifluoroacetone-acetic acid addition compounds and a thorium- acetate complex. Approximate equilibrium constants for the proposed reactions were calculated. The selection of the organic solvent will depend upon its effect on several factors which influence the distribution of thorium. Among these are the miscibility of the phases, the solubility of the metal chelate in the organic phase, and the distribution of acetic acid and thenoyltrifluoroacetone between the organic and aqueous phases.
