ON THE 22 kev STATE OF Sm$sup 14$$sup 9$
The low energy gamma spectrum and decay scheme of a Eu/sup 149/ source and the transmission through a Sm/sup 14/ absorber as a function of source velocity are presented. The occurrence of resonant absorption shows that at least part of the 22-kev radiation results from a transition to the ground state. A lower limit to the actual mean life of the state is 4 x 10/sup -9/ seconds. Assuming M1 transition, the total conversion coefficient is 12, and the lower limit to mean life against gamma transition is 5 x 10/sup -8/ seconds. (H.D.R.)
