EVALUATION OF BETA RADIATION AS A HYDROGENATION CATALYST. Interim Technical Status Report No. 3, September 1, 1962-December 31, 1962

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4732403

Nine radiation-hydrogenation runs were completed with the reactions exposed to 0.98 megarad of beta radiation at elevated temperatures and pressures. No significant radiation induced hydrogenation of aromatic bonds occurs for the simple aromatics, methylnaphthalene and biphenyl. Likewise, H/sub 2/ addition to coal extract is not significantly promoted by radiation at 429 nif- C and 5000 psi of H/sub 2/. In the case for methylnaphthalene and coal extract, there is, however, some evidence of selective radiation induced hydrocracking resulting in improved yield of heavy distillate oils from coal extract. The evidence is, however, not conclusive. Extended operations will permit a more rigorous proof of the presence or absence of radiation induced hydrocracking. The most positive effect of radiation observed is improved hydrofining. The removal of N/sub 2/, O/sub 2/, an S is more complete from the oils obtained from the radiation runs with coal extract.
