A source for producing pure bremsstrahlung is designed for use with a thickness-measuring gage. The source comprises a radioisotope emitting both beta rays and gamma rays and a target disposed in the path of the emitted rays and inclined with respect to the path. The target should be of a thickness sufficient to absorb most of the beta rays to produce bremsstrahlung while passing most of the gamma rays, e.g.. 0.050-in.-thick aluminum. The radiation detector for using this bremsstrahlung to measure thickness is disposed in the path of the bremsstrahlung but outside the path of transmitted gamma rays. (D.L.C.)
