An extrusion die for making green carbon bars for subsequent graphitization and use as reactor moderator bars is described which controls the orientation of carbon crystallites during the extrusion. The die is provided with a rectangular inlet and a rectangular outlet, and one dimension of the inlet is the same as the corresponding dimension of the outlet, while the other dimension of the inlet is from 2 to 5 times larger than the corresponding dimension of the outlet.
