ROTARY CONTROL ROD AND ITS DRIVE DEVICE
A rotary control rod for nuclear reactors comprises an aluminum rod covered with two opposite quadrants of neutron-absorbing sheets, e.g., of cadmium, and is mounted by ball bearings in the axis of a fixed cylindrical aluminum tube, the inner sunface of which is covered with similar opposite sheet quadrants. The neutron absorption of this control rod is in this way a function of the rotation of it. Suitably the tube and the rod are provided with an aluminum cladding for protecting the neutron-absorbing sheet quadrants. The rotation of the rod is controlled by an electric motor via a torque-limiting coupling, a position indicator, and a speed reduction system comprising suitably an axial screw engaging a nut hold from rotating. The rotation of the screw causes an axial displacement of the nut abutting via a roller on it against a helical edge of a cylinder coupled with the control rod. (IIB)
