The operation of the shutter stage of the C70062, a large demagnifying image intensifier, was tested. With an overall voltage of 14 kv, the first grid at ground potential, and the second grid at 325 v, the cathode is used as control electrode. The image is in focus for a cathode potential of 125 v above ground, and cuts off at 425 v. The 300 v swing produces even cut-off without spurious light. The tube has a center resolution of 18 line pairs per mm at the center of the cathode, and a resolution of 16 line pairs per mm 13 mm from the center. The magnification is 0.6. An ultimate pressure of 6 x 10/sup -8/ torr at tip-off was obtained by exhausting the tube with a 140 l/sec Vac-Ion Pump. (auth)
