It was found that exposing Drosophila to ionizing radiation actually extends life expectancy, rather than shortens it. A comparison was made of the survivorship of flies reared and housed under sterile conditions with those living in cultures containing the yeasts which normaliy accompany Drosophila and which are one of their immediate food sources. The effect of irradiation on the mortality rate, such as to produce an extension of life, was largely lost or absent when the flies were reared under absolutely aseptic conditions. It was also shown that the reguiar replenishment of the housing and food of individuaiiy housed Drosophila produces a considerable extension of the life span. Thermal shock exposures at 38.5 deg C for periods ranging from 1/2 to 3 hr (in fractionated dosages) resulted in a significant increase in the age-specific mortality rate of the flies surviving beyond 7 days after the exposure. The results suggest that denaturative processes may mimic the effects of time on the aging of Drosophila as reflected in mortality rates.
