EXPERIMENTAL PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS FOR A 300 TO 1000-Bev ACCELERATOR. DESIGN STUDY FOR A 300 TO 1000-Bev ACCELERATOR

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4728816
I. Determination of the experimental program requirements for a 300- to 1000-Bev accelerator involved examining the need for such a machine, reviewing interactions in the 10/sup 12/-ev energy range, studying particle production and secondary beams from such a device, considering beam separation techniques, exploring shielding problems, investigating particle detection and identification techniques, and considering specific experiments for the accelerator. II. The design study dealt with choice of accelerator type (alternating-gradient), particle dynamics in alternatinggradient synchrotrons, choice of basic parameters, injection techniques, magnet design, r-f acceleration methods, vacuum system requirements, instrumentation and control, plant arrangement, costs and manpower requirements. The possibility of installing 40- to 70-Bev electron synchrotrons in the same tunnels as the proton accelerator was also explored as was the practicability of a fixed-field alternating-gradient accelerator using superconducting air core magnets. 202 references.
