THE EFFECTS OF FRACTIONATED DOSES OF X RAYS ON THE MAJOR CORONARY ARTERIES OF HYPERCHOLESTEREMIC RABBITS

Journal Article · · American Journal of Clinical Pathology (U.S.)

The consequence of preconditioning blood vessels to x rays was tested in coronary arteries of rabbits by means of administering a high cholesterol diet for 2 months prior to irradiation. Young rabbits were fed a high cholesterol diet with corn oil, and 2500 rads were then administered to the precordium, in doses of 500 rads each week for 5 weeks. Animals were killed at intervals from 1 to 20 weeks after completion of therapy, and the hearts of the animals were compared with those of rabbits fed: a normal diet, without x rays; a hypercholesteremic diet, without x rays; and a normal diet, wlth x rays. In cortrast to those in the latter 5 groups, there were pronounced changes in the major coronary arteries of the hypercholesteremic rabbits that were also treated with fractionated doses of x rays, Hence hypercholesteremia and x rays seem to have a synergistic effect on the coronary arteries of rabbits that results in advanced degrees of arteriosclerosis.
