SARCOMA-LIKE TUMORS OF THE SKIN FOLLOWING IRRADIATION

Between 1931 and 1960, 32 patients with tumors of the skin after application of irradiation for benign conditions were examined. Histologic diagnoses revealed 6 patients to have multiple tumors: 5 had sarcoma-like tumors of the skin (2 as the only lesion and 3 associated with squamous and basal cell carcinomas). Histologic findings of the sarcomas varied greatly from fairly orderly interlacing bundles of spindie-shaped cells of connective tissue, having moderately hyperchromatic nuclei, to poorly differentiated fibroblastic lesions, having bizarre mitotic figures, giant nuclei, and almost complete lack of collagen formation. None of the tumors metastasized, and, where wide resections or amputations were performed, there was no evidence of recurrence. The patients were free of their disease except 2 in which fatal squamous cell carcinoma or lymphoma subsequently developed. It was concluded that the diagnosis of a fibrosarcoma in the fibroblastic growth after irradiation of the skin cannot be substantiated on histologic criteria alone. (P.C.H.)
