OILS, LIPOXIDASE, AND IONIZING RADIATIONS

The radioprotective effect of olive oil was investigated to ascertain whether action can be attributed to the antiperoxide effect of the oil. Mice were given 400-r whole-body x irradiation (the 30-day LD/sub 50/ value) before or after injection of olive oil. Some mice were also injected with lipoxidase to investigate the possibility of neutralizing the effect of the oil. When the oil was injected 30 min after irradiation, it slightly aggravated the effect of irradiation, in contrast to the earlier findings. When it was given 60 min before irradiation, no radioprotective effect was evident. Injection of olive oil plus lipoxidase had no effect whatever on the mortality curve over a 20-day period.
