THE ELASTIC SCATTERING OF ALPHA PARTICLES BY O$sup 16$ FROM 5.8 TO 10.0 Mev

Absolute differential cross sections for the elastic scattering by O/sup 16/ of alpha particles from a tandem Van de Graaff accelerator were measured. Excitation curves were measured at ten angles with bombarding energies from 5.8 to 10.0 Mev. Detailed angular distributions were measured at energies of 6.97, 8.63, and 9.92 Mev. Sixteen resonances were observed at bombarding energies of 5.95, Parity assignments were made for the levels corresponding to bombarding energies of 6.58, 6.97, approximates 7.5, 7.87, and 9.82 Mev. Tentative spin and parity assignments were proposed for the resonances at 7.2, 7.27, 7.63, 8.20, approximates 8.8, 9.07, and 9.42 Mev. Limits were established for the spin and parities of the resonances observed at 8.95 and 9.58 Mev. Reasonabiy good theoretical fits to the cross section were obtained for the angular distributions at 6.97 and 8.83 Mev. An interesting correlation of the data in terms of collective theory was made. It was possible to fit ten of the levels identified in the experiment into rotational bands. (Dissertation Abstr., 23: No. 5, Nov. 1962)
