GAMMA RADIATION FROM N$sup 14$ + d AND C$sup 13$ + d

A magnetic-lens pair spectrometer with 2.5% resolution has been used to study radiations produced by the bombardment of N/sup 14/ and C/sup 13/ by deuterons from a Van de Graaff accelerator. Gamma rays from the bombardment of N/ sup 14/ with 4.5-Mev deutero were observed with quantum energies of 8.32l plus or minus 0.020, 9.07 plus or minus 0.04, 10.03 plus or minus 0.04, and 10.81 plus or minus 0.04 Mev. The detection of radiation from the 10.81-Mev level of N/sup 15/, in competition with proton emission, indicates a small proton width for this level and an argument is advanced for the assignment of spin and parity values of 3//sup +/ to this state. Gamma rays from the bombardment of C/sup 13/ with 4.6-Mev deuterons were observed with energies of 4.897 plus or minus 0.025, 5.102 plus or minus 0.026, 5.669 plus or minus 0.025, 5.833 plus or minus 0.030 (not Doppler-corrected), 6.090 plus or minus 0.020, 6.419 plus or minus 0.030, 6.700 plus or minus 0.025, 7.012 plus or minus 0.025, and 7.323 plus or minus 0.025 Mep. Experiments were performed which indicate conclusively that the 4.46-Mev gamma ray from the bombardment of C/sup 13/ by deuterons is from B/sup 11/. All gamma -ray energies listed have been coreoted for Doppler shift except where indicated. (auth)
