RADIOACTIVE CONTAMINATION OF THE AIR ABOVE THE INDIAN AND PACIFIC OCEANS DURING 1959-60 (in Russian)

The geographic distribution of the artificial radioactive contamination of the air above the western portion of the Pacific and of the northern portion of the Indian Ocean was measured during the October 6, 1959-April 28, 1960 cruise of the research ship Vityaz.'' It was expected that reliable data would be obtained from measurements or the spreading of air activity over the water because of the great thermal stability of the air masses in those areas. An air filtering device with a flow rate of about 3000 m/sup 3//hr of air was used to collect the samples for the determination of the air activity. The filters were changed every 1 or 2 days. The BETA + gamma activity of the material collected was determined after incineration; in addition, radiochemical measurements were also carried out. The results indicated that the radioactivity of the aerosols varies only slightly with the longitude but strongly with the latitude. The highest activity was found at 35 un. Concent 85% North latitude, at the periphery of the Northern Pacific high-pressure zone, and at 25 un. Concent 85% South latitude, corresponding to the high-pressure area of the Southern Indian Ocean. From these data it was concluded that the distribution of the activity is due to the meridianal circulation. The scheme proposed by G. Dobson (Proc. Roy. Soc. A236: 187 (1956)), according to which the activity from the stratosphere falls out in the region of the 60 un. Concent 85% latitude, was corrected by assuming on the basis of meteorological considerations that a jet stream is formed from the stratosphere near 30 un. Concent 85% . (TTT)
