DETERMINATION OF THE THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY OF BERYLLIA ROD BY MEASURING AXIAL TEMPERATURE DISTRIBUTION

Journal Article · · Mater. Res. Std.
OSTI ID:4727072

The determination of thermal conductivity using the equilibrium temperature distribution was investigated on a sintered beryllia rod. The rod was heated at one end and the heat allowed to dissipate from its side surface into a constant-temperature environment. The investigation was conducted from about --200 to 15O deg C. With this method a single series of measurements can supply the full temperature-dependence curve in the temperature interval between the environment and the heater temperature. The values of the heat transfer coefficient appeared unnecessary for calculating the thermal conductivity. The accuracy of the measurements was, however, limited to about plus or minus 10% due to the difficulty in determining exactly the amount of heat dissipated and the strong temperature-dependence of the thermal conductivity of beryllia.
