PRESSURE TRANSFORMER FOR MEASURING THE PRESSURE OF A RADIOACTIVELY CONTAMINATED MEDIUM

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4726445
The pressure transformer is composed of two diaphragms that are rigidly connected by a rod. One side of the first diaphragm is in contact with the contaminated reactor coolant medium, the pressure of which is to be measured. In order to prevent leakage of the reactor coolant through the first diaphragm, the other side is enveloped by a gas shielding. The shielding gas is circulated in an auxiliary loop. In this loop the gas enters the pressure transformer through a fixed orifice, and after passing the other side of the first diaphragm it flows via a variable pressure reducing device against the second diaphragm, against the side of the diaphragm that is opposite the first diaphragm, and from there via a fixed pressure reducing device out of the pressure transformer. The gas at the outlet of the fixed pressure reducing device acts upon the outer side of the second diaphragm. Thus it exerts on one face a pressure corresponding to that pressure at the inlet of the fixed pressure reducing device and on the outer face a pressure corresponding to the outlet pressure of the device. The pressure difference between the inlet and the outlet of the fixed pressure reducing device is measured, this pressure difference being proportional to the pressure difference between the contaminated coolant and the shielding gas.
