Tagged K/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ crystals containing, constant amount of Ce/sup 141/ ( approximates 0.08 mcs/g) and a variable amount of S/sup 35/ (0, 0.5, and 50 mcs/g) were prepared by crystallizing K/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ from a Na/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ solution. The K/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ crystals were dried and sieved. One gram portions of the tagged K/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ salt (0.3 to 0.5 mm fraction) were added to 25 ml of saturated K/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ solution in 0.5 or 1.5N HNO/sub 3/. The mixture was then agitated at a temperature of 20 deg C. Samples of the supernatant liquid were taken at different time intervals in order to determine the Ce/sup 141/ and S/sup 35/ radiometrically. The recrystallization of K/sub 2/ SO/sub 4/ was faster in 1.5N HNO/sub 3/ than in 0.5N HNO/sub 3/, and in all cases, the K/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ with the higher specific activity of S/sup 35/ recrystallized more rapidly than the lowspecific-activity K/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ salt. The distribution of Ce in the K/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ changed from a logarithmic distribution with lambda = 16 to a linear distribution with D = 16 and 22 respectively, in the 1.5N HNO/sub 3/ and in the 0.5N HNO/sub 3/ solutions. The rate of redistribution of Ce between the high-specific-activity K/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ containing 50 mcs/g of S/sup 35/ and the saturated 0.5N HNO/sub 3/ was significartly greater than it -was with the lowspecific-activity K/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ precipitate. This type of behavior was not observed in the 1.5N HNO/sub 3/ solution. The effect of irradiation on the crystal lattice is to accelerate the recrystallization process. (TTT)
