A boiling water reactor has 2 core composed of a plurality of vertical fuel elements through which the boiling water rises. Each fuel element is extended at its upper extremity by a vertical riser for optimizing the circulation of the boiling water. According to this patent means are provided for maintaining the water level at a given height over the upper ends of the risers, while each riser encloses a water-steam separator inducing in the water- steam mixture a giratory movement and has a vertical tube for evacuating the steam from the axis of the riser and for leading it into the space above the water level.
