$gamma$-RAY INDUCED GRAFT COPOLYMERIZATION. III. THE SEPARATION OF POLYETHYLENE-STYRENE GRAFT COPOLYMER
Powdered polyethylene (PE) prepared by the dissolutionprecipitation procedure was grafted with styrene by gamma irradiation from a 300-C Co/sup 60/ facility at 7.4 x 10/sup 4/ r/hr at 25 deg C. Under the same conditions, the weights of the grafted polystyrene were always less than those of polyethylene film. The product contained very little occluded polystyrene homopolymer. The rate of grafting on low-pressure PE was also higher than the rate for high- pressure PE. The graft copolymer was separated from the reaction product by means of fractional precipitation using xylene-n-propyl alcohol and xylene- triethylene glycol, and the fractions were checked by turbidimetric titration and infrared absorption spectra. No free PE was observed. (OID)
