AN EVALUATION OF A CESIUM ION ROCKET EMPLOYING A LARGE POROUS TUNGSTEN IONIZER

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4724404
An ion rocket engine was operated for more than 50 hours using a porous tungsten ionizer. The ionizer was assembled using the techniques of electron beam welding, combined with a high temperature furnace braze. Accelerator and power efficiencies of 90 to 70 percent, respectively, were obtained at a current density of 113 amperes per square meter. This power efficiency was obtained at a specific impulse of 8880 seconds. Preliminary results indicate a propellant utilization efficiency of about 90 percent. (auth)
