Appearance potentials and relative abundances are reported for the principal positive ions in the mass spectra of phosphorus trichloride and diphosphorus tetrachloride. Probable ionization and dissociation processes are deduced from the energetics, and the heats of formation of the various ions are given. The following molecular ionization potentials are given: phosphorus trichloride, 10.75 plus or minus 0.2 and diphosphorus tetrachloride, 9.36 plus or minus 0.2 ev. Ionization potentials of PCl, PCl/sub 2/, and P/sub 2/ were calculated to be 9.6, 9.0, and 11.1 ev, respectively. D-(Cl/sub 2/P-- PCl/sub 2/ ) = 58 kcal/mole. (auth)
